How Does a Tower Garden Work?
A Tower Garden looks very different from a traditional vegetable garden. There are no rows of soil and no garden beds — plants grow vertically from openings around the tower instead.
So how does a Tower Garden actually work? The basic idea is surprisingly simple. Water and mineral nutrients are stored in a reservoir at the bottom of the tower, pumped to the top, and delivered to the plant roots before returning to the reservoir to be used again.
How Does a Tower Garden Work?
Tower Garden is a vertical aeroponic growing system that grows plants without traditional soil.
A pump moves water and dissolved mineral nutrients from the reservoir at the base of the Tower Garden to the top of the tower. The nutrient solution then moves down through the inside of the tower, where it reaches the exposed plant roots.
The unused solution drains back into the reservoir and is recirculated. A timer automatically switches the pump on and off throughout the day, repeating the watering cycle for you.

How the Tower Garden Growing Cycle Works
Tower Garden continuously reuses the water and nutrients stored in its reservoir. Here's what happens during each watering cycle.
Water & Nutrients Start in the Reservoir
Water is mixed with the appropriate amount of mineral nutrients and stored in the reservoir at the base of the Tower Garden.
The Pump Sends Water Up
A submersible pump moves the nutrient solution from the reservoir through the center of the tower to the top.
Water Moves Down the Tower
At the top, the nutrient solution is distributed inside the tower and moves downward through the growing sections.
The Roots Receive Water & Nutrients
Plant roots grow inside the tower, where they receive moisture, dissolved mineral nutrients and access to oxygen.
Water Returns to the Reservoir
The solution that isn't taken up by the plants drains back into the reservoir instead of simply running away.
The Timer Repeats the Cycle
The timer controls the pump so the watering cycle repeats automatically throughout the day.
Water and mineral nutrients are pumped from the reservoir to the top of the Tower Garden and then return to the reservoir to be recirculated.
What Are the Main Parts of a Tower Garden?
You don't need to understand complicated hydroponic equipment to operate a Tower Garden. The basic system has just a few important components.
The Reservoir
The base holds the water and mineral nutrient solution used to feed the plants.
The Pump
A submersible pump inside the reservoir sends the nutrient solution upward through the center of the tower.
The Timer
The timer automatically controls when the pump runs, creating repeated watering cycles without requiring you to switch the pump on and off.
The Growing Tower
Plants sit in growing ports around the tower while their roots develop inside, where the circulating nutrient solution can reach them.
Mineral Nutrients
Because there is no soil supplying minerals, essential plant nutrients are mixed directly into the reservoir water.
Seedlings & Net Pots
Seedlings are started in rockwool and placed into net pots, which support the plants while allowing their roots to grow into the tower.
What Makes Tower Garden Aeroponic?
Tower Garden is commonly described as an aeroponic growing system because plants grow without traditional soil and much of their root system is suspended inside the tower rather than buried in a growing medium.
The circulating nutrient solution repeatedly reaches the roots while the roots also have access to oxygen inside the tower.
The water isn't discarded after every cycle. It returns to the reservoir and is used again, making Tower Garden a recirculating system.
Where Does the Plant Get Its Nutrition Without Soil?
Plants don't actually eat soil. They need essential mineral nutrients, water, light, oxygen and carbon dioxide. In a Tower Garden, the mineral nutrients that would normally become available to roots through soil are supplied directly in the reservoir water.
