You can have the perfect nutrients, healthy seedlings, and plenty of sunlight—but if your pH is out of range, your plants can still struggle.
Many new Tower Garden growers focus on adding nutrients and topping off water, but don't realize that pH controls whether your plants can actually use those nutrients. Think of pH as the key that unlocks the food you've already provided.
The good news? Once you understand the basics, checking and adjusting pH only takes a few minutes.
What Is pH?
pH measures how acidic or alkaline your nutrient solution is.
The pH scale runs from 0 to 14:

Below 7 = Acidic

7 = Neutral

Above 7 = Alkaline
For Tower Gardens, the ideal range is:

This is the sweet spot where nearly every nutrient is available for your plants to absorb.
Why pH Matters
Plants don't absorb nutrients simply because they're in the water.
The nutrients must also be in a form that the roots can use.
When pH drifts outside the recommended range, certain nutrients become much harder for the plant to absorb, even if there's plenty available.
For example:

Iron becomes difficult to absorb at higher pH levels, causing new leaves to yellow.

Calcium availability can decrease.

Phosphorus becomes less available.

Other micronutrients begin to "lock out."
This is called nutrient lockout.
Many gardeners mistake nutrient lockout for a nutrient deficiency and add more nutrients, which usually makes the problem worse.
The solution is often simply bringing the pH back into the proper range.
What Is the Best pH for a Tower Garden?
We recommend maintaining your nutrient solution between:
5.5 and 6.5
Anywhere in this range is perfectly acceptable.
Don't chase an exact number like 5.8 every day.
In fact, allowing pH to naturally drift through this range lets different nutrients become slightly more available over time.
The goal is stability, not perfection.
How to Test pH
There are two common methods.
Option 1: Liquid Test Kit (Recommended for Most Gardeners)
The Tower Garden pH kit includes:

How to use it

Fill the vial to the line with nutrient solution.

Add the recommended number of drops of indicator solution.

Cap and gently invert the vial to mix.

Compare the color to the chart.
💡 Top Tip: You don't need to fill the entire test vial every time. Use a small syringe to measure 2 mL of nutrient solution and mark the 2 mL level on your test vial with a permanent marker. Then use just 2 drops of the pH indicator solution. You'll get the same accurate reading while using less than half the testing solution, helping your bottle last more than twice as long.
The liquid kit is inexpensive, reliable, and doesn't require batteries or calibration.
For many home gardeners, it's all you'll ever need.
Option 2: Digital pH Meter
Digital meters provide a precise numerical reading.
Instead of matching colors, you'll see a value such as:

Many growers prefer digital meters because they're quick and easy to read.
However...
Digital meters require calibration.
This is the step many people skip.
Over time, the probe slowly drifts and becomes less accurate.
If you never calibrate it, a meter showing 6.0 might actually be reading 6.8, causing nutrient issues while you think everything is perfect.
Most digital meters should be calibrated:

before first use

every few weeks with regular use

anytime the readings seem unusual

after long-term storage
Always use fresh calibration solutions and store the probe according to the manufacturer's instructions.
A quality meter that's properly maintained can be extremely accurate.
A poorly maintained meter is often less accurate than the simple liquid test kit.
Why Does pH Change?
Many people expect the pH to stay exactly where they left it.
It won't.
Your Tower Garden is constantly changing.
As plants absorb nutrients, they naturally alter the chemistry of the water.
Several things can affect pH:

Mixing new nutrients

Your local water source

Chlorine or chloramine treatment

Water hardness and alkalinity
Some movement is completely normal.
Why Does pH Rise as Plants Grow?
One of the biggest reasons is nutrient uptake.
Plants don't absorb every nutrient equally.
Some nutrients are used faster than others.
As roots take in nutrients, they release hydrogen ions (H⁺) or hydroxide ions (OH⁻) to maintain electrical balance.
This naturally changes the pH of the remaining solution.
It's one reason your pH can slowly drift upward or downward even when you haven't added anything to the reservoir.
Healthy plants are actively changing their environment.
That's normal.
How Often Should You Check pH?
For a healthy Tower Garden:

Check every few days for the first week or two.

After adding nutrients: Recheck after the solution has circulated for 15–30 minutes.
💡 Top Tip: Kale is often one of the first crops to tell you your pH is out of balance. If your kale leaves begin to yellow while you're adding the correct amount of nutrients, it's a good indication that it's time to check your pH. Catching a pH issue early can often prevent other crops from showing symptoms.
Once you learn how your water behaves, you'll develop a routine. If you notice your pH doesn't change much, you can check it less frequently.
How to Keep pH Stable
While some fluctuation is expected, these tips help minimize large swings.
Start with quality water
Your source water has a huge impact on pH stability.
If you're using city water, consider using a filter to remove chlorine or chloramine and reduce variability.
Mix nutrients correctly
Always:

Fill the reservoir with water first.

Add Mineral Blend A.

Mix thoroughly.

Add Mineral Blend B.
-
Mix again.
💡 Top Tip: Never mix the Mineral Blend A and B concentrates together before adding them to water. Always add each concentrate separately to the reservoir and mix well between additions. It doesn't matter whether you add Part A or Part B first. The important thing is that each is diluted in water before adding the other.
How to Adjust pH
If your pH falls outside the recommended 5.5–6.5 range, it's time to make a small adjustment.

If your pH is below 5.5, add a small amount of pH Up.

If your pH is above 6.5, add a small amount of pH Down.
Always follow the manufacturer's directions, but remember that a little goes a long way. It's much easier to make several small adjustments than to overcorrect and have to adjust back in the opposite direction.
After adding pH Up or pH Down, allow the Tower Garden to circulate the water for 15–30 minutes, then test the pH again before making another adjustment.
💡 Top Tip: If you know you'll need to add nutrients and adjust your pH, always add the nutrients first. Nutrients naturally change the pH of the water, so adjusting the pH before adding nutrients usually means you'll have to do it all over again.
Avoid making constant adjustments
Many gardeners make pH worse by adjusting it every day.
If your pH is:

6.1 tomorrow

5.8 the next day
Everything is working exactly as it should.
Only adjust pH when it moves outside the recommended range.
Change your nutrient solution regularly
Over time, plants absorb nutrients at different rates. Even if there's still plenty of water in the reservoir, some nutrients become depleted while others remain in excess.
This imbalance can contribute to nutrient lock, where an excess of one mineral interferes with the uptake of another, even though both are present in the solution. Nutrient lock can also occur when the pH drifts outside the ideal range.
Replacing the nutrient solution every 1–2 months restores the proper nutrient balance, helps maintain a stable pH, and reduces the risk of nutrient lock.

Common pH Mistakes
